Rainbow Stash: Hero Colour Challenge

The 2025 Rainbow Stash: Hero Colour Challenge brought together textile artists and makers from around the world in a year-long exploration of colour and technique.

Each month, participants were given a designated Hero Colour and a Textile Technique Word Prompt, with the challenge to create an original 10-inch square textile artwork. While everyone worked within the same parameters, the resulting pieces were wonderfully individual, reflecting different materials, techniques, ideas and artistic voices.

The project resulted in a collection of 281 textile artworks, demonstrating the extraordinary creative possibilities that emerge when artists are given a shared starting point but the freedom to interpret it in their own way.

Premiering in Melbourne April 2026 at AQC – Australasian Quilt Convention, with Craft Events, the display drew huge crowds.

The Hero Colour challenge will also be displayed at the Quilt Expo Beaujolais in France in 2027. (Along with our new challenge “Spin the Wheel”)

Through out this series I developed a collection of Domestic animals. I wanted to create them in 3 different techniques: Painted, Collaged and Printed (various methods)
Instead of using the words as techniques, I wrote a story about each pet and embedded the word in there.
