Explorations

Not every work belongs to a series. Some begin as an experiment, a new technique, or simply an idea that needs pursuing.

This collection brings together pieces made while exploring colour, texture, pattern and the possibilities of cloth — some small studies, others developed into more substantial works.

I work across painted fabric, stitch, collage, appliqué and mixed media, but technique is rarely the starting point. I’m more interested in what a material can contribute to an idea, and what happens when familiar processes are pushed, combined or used in unexpected ways.

Over the years, Brenda has explored a wide range of techniques and styles — often following a creative process sparked by a prompt, a chance encounter, or inspiration drawn from another artist. Hermit (above) began within a textile art workshop, inspired by an encounter on a beach in Vanuatu.
