Dame Edna Everage — Rule Breaker & Superstar

Created for the Stars challenge at AQC Melbourne, this portrait celebrates Dame Edna Everage — the brilliantly outrageous alter ego of Melbourne-born comedian Barry Humphries.

I chose Edna for her unapologetic presence, vivid colour and razor-sharp wit. Beneath the outrageous glasses and flamboyant persona was a woman who refused to be diminished. In an era when television interviews were overwhelmingly conducted and controlled by men, Edna could turn the tables, disarm misogyny with humour and leave foolishness nowhere to hide.

From a suburban Melbourne creation to a character who entertained royalty, Dame Edna became an icon by breaking the rules — and making sure everyone was looking.

For me, she embodies the spirit of Women’s Work: I will not hide, I will speak up, and I will not let foolishness go unnoticed.
