This piece explores the way colour transforms with depth. I chose to represent the magic that happens to fish as they move through differing depths of water — the shift from vivid surface colour to the greys, browns and flashes of light that dominate below.
Ocean fish carry unique shapes, markings and colours, yet at around 20 metres red begins to disappear, followed by the rest of the spectrum in turn. Brought back to the surface, the full colour returns — vibrant pinks, golds, teals, yellows and electric blues.
Fish themselves see a wider colour range than humans do, and many use this shift in light to change colour rapidly — for camouflage, for attracting a mate, or for evading predators.
